Counselling Services
|
|
Through the promotion of professional counselling services, Siaap has
helped people achieve emotional wholeness in dealing with the
consequences of HIV/AIDS. Since 1996, Siaap has helped train, place, and
supervise counsellors in over 150 counselling centres and government
hospitals in India. |

Preventing Parent-to-Child
Transmission of HIV (PPTCT)
PPTCT centres help
pre-natal mothers avoid unwanted pregnancy, prevent tranmission of HIV
from mother to child, and provide support for HIV-positive mothers and
children. The PPTCT design is a collaboration of UNICEF, the Tamil Nadu
State AIDS Control Society, and SIAAP. SIAAP recruits, trains, and
supervises counsellors for the centres.
|
65 PPTCT centres
exist in Tamil Nadu, situated in government hospitals, medical
colleges, private hospitals, and Christian missionaries
|
|
|
Tamil Nadu is one
of only 5 states in India having PPTCT centres
98% of PPTCT
centres in Tamil Nadu are fully functional, operating with group
education sessions, counselling, testing services, an on-call
doctor, and a pharmacy

Voluntary Counselling and
Confidentiality Testing Centre (VCCTC)
The Voluntary Counselling and Confidentiality Testing Centre program was
created to reduce the transmission of HIV through voluntary testing and
counselling. VCCTCs provide professional, client-centred services in an
easily accessible, non-threatening, confidential and non-discriminatory
environment.
There are 52 VCCTCs in
Tamil Nadu, the largest number in all of India
SIAAP is also on the
board of the Voluntary Counselling and Testing Steering Committee, an
advisory board to NACO
The Tamil Nadu State
AIDS Control Society (TNSACS) commissioned SIAAP to place counsellors
in all VCCTC and PPTCT centres
TNSACS attempted to
mandate a minimum educational qualification for counsellors, however
SIAAP protested this standard, arguing that many of their best counsellors draw from experience and not book-knowledge
SIAAP publishes the
Counsellor Digest, a forum for information, debate, and testimonials
written for counsellors by counsellors in HIV care.
